Experience the breathtaking beauty of the Greater Caucasus on an adventurous journey Hiking and with packhorses through Khevsureti, the ancient frontier of the Christian people of the mountain tribe of the Khevsurs in Northern Georgia. We travel to remote mountain routes accompanied by local Khevsurs and German/English/Russian tour guides along unspoilt valleys, snowcapped peaks over vertiginous mountain passes, crossing crystal-clear streams and thriving high mountain pastures. We also experience the Georgian capital Tbilisi, the Church of the Cross Jvari, Ananuri Fortress, Stepantsminda and Mount Kazbegi, Juta, Roshka and the famous fortresses of Shatili and Mutso. The Caucasus in Georgia is a dream for hikers, culture researchers, nature lovers and adventurers.
Day 1 Arrival in Tbilisi. Site Seeing Tour of the Old Tbilisi, Narikala Fortress, Mother of Georgia, fancy Cafe Pur Pur via Freedom Square to the main avenue Rustaveli Prospekt and along the main attractions of the Georgian capital. Dinner in a typical Georgian restaurant with the tasty Georgian traditional dishes like Khachapuri, Mtsvadi, Khinkali and Georgian Wine – you will be surprised! Overnight in a central Hostel in Tbilisi.
Day 2 Visit to the Church of the Cross “Jvari” from the 6th Century with its magnifique view to the Old capital Mtskheta in the morning. We drive along the scenic Georgian Military Highway to the fortress Ananuri on the Jinvali Reservoir. Visit of the fortress and the two churches from the 17th century. Picknik along the Georgian Military Road. Continue to the Cross Pass of 2395m to Stepantsminda at the foot of Mount Kasbegi of 5033m altitude. Hike of two hours to the scenic Tsminda Sameba Church from the 13th Century. Afterwards we continue over 17 km by car through a breathtaking route to the village Juta at 2220m in Khevsureti. We have a typical Khevsurian dinner in nice family hotel. Overnight stay in Juta
Day 3 After the Breakfast we start with tour through the pictoresque village of Juta and continue with 4-hour hike to acclimatize to an altitude of 2500 – 2600 m at the foot of Chaukhi massif (3700 m) nearby Juta. Picnic in an incredibly pristine mountains. Leisure and relaxing in the high Caucasus peaks. Overnight stay in Juta.
Day 4 Trekking tour over 22 Kilometers and 10-12 hours on foot and with packhorses over the Arkhoty Pass of 3200m to Arkhoty, a very remote Khevsurian village in the romantic valley of the fast running river Assa. Overnight in Arkhoty at a simple Family Hotel with Omari and his family.
Day 5-6 Days of rest and recreation in the Valleys of Assa. We visit the villages of Amga and Chimgaand can learn about the ancient traditions of the Khevsur people. Horseback riding or hiking on request. Anyone who wants can try trout fishing in the Assa. Let your mind wander. Overnights in Family Hotel in Archoty
Day 7 Challenging day hiking with pack horses from the village of Arkhoty to village Roshka about 20 km via the Roshkapass of 3100 Meters with tremendous views of the surrounding mountains and the Chaukhi-massif. Hike of about 8-9 hours. Overnight in the village Roshka (2050m) at the nice Family hotel of Shota Tsiklauri with with a tasty dinner.
Day 8 6-7 km hike to the beautiful Abudelauri-mountain lakes near village Roshka. Excursion in the village and visit of some typical Khevsurian family who can show and describe their life style and traditions. Overnight Family Hotel in Roshka
Day 9 10 km hike down the gorge in direction Phavi Aragvi. From there 3 hours trip with 4WD vehicles over the Bear Cross Pass of 2600 m to the famous fortressed village of Shatili. Walk in Shatili and dinner at night host Family in Shatili.
Day 10 Scenic day hike to the Fortress town Mutso. Climbing up the fortress with spectacular views. Picnic in Mutso. Overnight in Shatili.
Day 11 One hour Drive in direction of Bear Cross Pass to village Kistani. We stop for a 2-hours hike at the abandoned village of Kistani with its amazing landscapes. Drive over the pass to village Korsha where we visit a Museum of traditional customs and crafts of the Khevsurs. Visit of the studio of the artist Shota Arabuli and talk about his works and artistic philosophy. At a cheerful farewell evening we can enjoy the impressions of the journey andsay Good bye to the Khevsurs. Overnight in Shota’s Family Hotel in Korsha.
Day 12 Delicious Mountain breakfast. Drive along the wild river Pshavi-Aragvi to Jinvali Reservoir and return to Tbilisi. Leisure in the afternoon. Transfer to the Airport or individual extension of your stay in Georgia.
